Rainy Days and Mondays

Happy Monday to our CFC Family:



This morning, I woke up to a rainy Monday here in Winnipeg, and right away, that old “Carpenters” song came to mind; “Rainy Days and Mondays.” You probably know the line: “Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.”


As I stood looking out at the grey skies, I found myself thinking… What an odd line, really! Why would a certain day of the week and a little rain have the power to always get someone down?


Sure, I get the sentiment, Mondays mark the return to “routine,” and rainy weather can put a damper on our “sunny plans,” but is it really fair to say they “always” bring us down?


What if Monday was the first day of your holidays? Would that day of the week still get you down? What if we hadn’t seen rain in weeks, and your garden or the local farms desperately needed moisture? Would a rainy Monday still feel gloomy or might you actually be thankful for it?


After contemplating this song for a few minutes, I decided to look up the lyrics online. I quickly discovered that they don’t get much brighter. Speaking from a place of resignation rather than truth, the song goes on to say;


“Talkin' to myself and feelin' old

Sometimes I'd like to quit

Nothin' ever seems to fit

Hangin' around, nothin’ to do but frown,


Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.

What I’ve got they used to call the blues

Nothin’ is really wrong

Feelin like I don’t belong

Walkin' around

Some kind of lonely clown

Rainy days and Mondays always get me down.”


These lines carry more than just a melancholy attitude, they speak of isolation, hopelessness, and weariness with life.


Interestingly, while Karen Carpenter didn’t write the song, it’s hard not to feel her voice echoing through those words when you listen to it as if they were her own.


Truth is, Karen quietly battled low self-worth and a relentless pressure to be perfect; both personally and professionally. She suffered from anorexia nervosa at a time when few understood it. Behind her calm, graceful presence was a young woman longing for acceptance, but never quite feeling “enough.” Her pain, masked by her beautiful smile, eventually took a devastating toll and she died at the young age of 32.


This is why God’s message of hope is so vital. The truth is, when we let our circumstances and challenges dictate how we feel; convincing ourselves that a situation will “always bring us down;” we begin to self-diagnose how we will navigate life moving forward instead of surrendering it fully to the Lord.


That’s why the apostle Paul’s words in Philippians 4:12-13 are so powerful:


“I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through Him who gives me strength.”


Paul wasn’t writing this from a beach or a mountain top, but rather from a prison. And yet, he had learned to live from a source of joy and strength that had nothing to do with his surroundings. His peace came from Christ, not from comfort, predictability, or sunshine.


In our own lives, even in our “rainy Mondays,” moments, we can still learn the secret of contentment. In the middle of a world that feels so chaotic a times, filled with conflict, economic pressure, cultural tension, and struggle, we can still say with confidence: We are blessed. We are not forgotten. We are not without hope.


That when we wake up to what may seem like a “Rainy Monday,” we can still choose to say; “This is the day the Lord has made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)


Not because everything is perfect. Not because the rain stopped or the week feels easy, but because this day, like every day, is a gift from God. And He is with us in it!


So the next time you hear that song, or wake up to a rainy Monday, let it be a gentle reminder:

You don’t have to be ruled by your circumstances.

Your peace isn’t tied to the forecast or the day of the week.

Your joy has a deeper source — and His name is Jesus.
