Consider the Ant

Happy Monday to our CFC family;

On Friday, I was walking across my driveway when something small caught my eye. As I looked closer, I saw an ant carrying what looked like a dead bug. I paused for a moment, admiring this tiny creature and was reminded—yet again—of how incredibly strong ants are. Like many of you probably already know, ants can carry 10-50x their own weight. To put that into perspective, it would be like one of us lifting and walking off with a fully loaded SUV on our shoulders. Absolutely mind-blowing.

But then something even more fascinating happened right in front of me. As I watched the ant struggle along with its heavy load, another ant quickly approached from the distance. To my surprise, the first ant handed off the bug to the second one, who then carried it toward the edge of the driveway and disappeared into the entrance of their underground nest.

And what about the first ant? He simply turned around and headed back in the direction he came from—likely off to find more food for the rest of his community.

What an neat moment to witness—this micro-world, often unnoticed, working together with such unity and purpose.

It brought to my mind the scripture of Proverbs 6:6–8 which says;

“Go to the ant, you sluggard;

consider its ways and be wise!

It has no commander,

no overseer or ruler,

yet it stores its provisions in summer

and gathers its food at harvest.”

These verses in Proverbs call us to consider the ant—not just for its diligence and strength, but for its remarkable spirit of collaboration. Ants work together in seamless unity, instinctively supporting one another to meet the needs of the whole. They have no overseer, no visible leader, and yet they thrive through shared effort and common purpose.

So here’s the question Proverbs invites us to reflect on: If the ant thrives without a leader, then who is ours? The answer is found in the promise of Jesus—who assured us that we would not be left as orphans, but that He would send us the Holy Spirit. He is our divine Helper and Guide, empowering us to walk in unity and love. The Spirit leads us personally, but also draws us together—enabling us to function as one body. Where ants operate purely by instinct, we are led by the very Spirit of God.

Watching that small moment unfold in my driveway reminded me of our call to “carry one another's burdens.” When we see a brother or sister weighed down, we’re not meant to stand by—we’re called to step in, offer support, and help lighten their load. Just as that second ant took the burden so the first could continue his work, we too are called to serve one another so that each person can carry out their calling more effectively.

Can you imagine how strong and impactful the body of Christ would be if we all lived this way? Let me encourage each of us to stay alert for opportunities to serve, support, and uplift. Let’s bear the weight together.

Because sometimes, the smallest creatures carry the biggest lessons—and the tiniest among us can teach the greatest truths.

Have a wonderful week and we’ll see you Sunday.
